I only knew Suzanne as an older person and got to know her through her great friend Eve Ross. Suzanne and I enjoyed speaking French occasionally, she praised me for my good accent but then would gently correct my grammar. She was born and raised in New Caledonia and came to Australia, I think, to go to University in Brisbane. She said to me one day she lived with a family who were Scottish so she had an English vocabulary which included Scottish words unknown to most Australian ears which she found quite amusing. At her funeral I learned a lot about her great contribution to the Mitchell Library as its librarian in the seventies. She seemed a very gentle person and very knowledgeable about many topics- there was a quiet nobility about her. Finally, it is worth noting that a French speaking woman from a small colony in the South Pacific became the head of the prestigious Mitchell Library of New South Wales. A very considerable achievement

Suzanne was a woman of impeccable taste and unfailing courtesy - a woman to live up to, if you like. Her scholarship was profound, though you would hardly have guessed it from her modest manner. She was a loyal friend to John Fletcher and his family for many years, through their membership in the Australian Book Collectors' Society. We will miss her, and speak of her always with affection.
