Verlander throws gem as Tigers smoke Yankees 16-0 Tuesday August 28, 2007 DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Verlander found his groove on the mound, and the Detroit Tigers rediscovered their stroke at the plate. Verlander shut down the New York Yankees with his best stuff since throwing a no-hitter while Detroit roughed up Mike Mussina and a couple of relievers in its highest-scoring game this season. The All-Star pitcher and reigning AL Rookie of the Year gave up just three hits and Placido Polanco was one of three Tigers with at least three hits to lead Detroit to a 16-0 win over New York on Monday night. It was the most one-sided road shutout loss in the Yankees' history, topping a 15-0 defeat at the Chicago White Sox on July 15, 1907, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Ryan, For as long as I've been alive you have been there with me. From riding big wheels down the back hill through piles of leaves that Dad had just raked to selling baseball cards together at his office for a nickel a piece, you've been there with me. From the times we built forts out of couch cushions to the time when you taught your little brother how to water ski from the back of our pontoon boat, you've been there with me. Now that you are gone there is a missing piece in my heart and everyone else's who has had the pleasure of knowing you. You were the best big brother anyone could ask for, and a great family man. I have never seen you so happy and proud as you were when you were telling me about your new baby boy Ian. When my son, your nephew, was born last Friday I was looking forward to being together and watching he and Ian play and have as much fun as we did together growing up. I know that will never happen now, but I will always cherish the times we had. I am proud to name my son Tyler Ryan Betton, in your honor. You will never be forgotten Ryan. I love you big bro.
