I worked for Max as his photo processing and printing guy in his studio he had in George St, on top of the Aben Loan Company building in the Hay Market. This must have been in the mid '60's as I was around 20yrs at the time.He was a great guy to work with, though always in negotiations for the next big job, which was going to make us famous and rich! At the time that I was their was also the time that Alan Nye, one of Sydney's top fashion photographers was working out of Max's studio. I remember Max as a true gentleman who had the talent to be able to create a believable argument/story out of a lot of near truths and unbelievable circumstances. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Max's garage was overflowing with stuff and if you ever needed something, no matter how strange or unusual, it would be in Max's garage. But the best thing about Max was that he would give you time. If you had a car problem not only would he have a part, he'd help you fix it, or he'd give you advice on the best way to do it. I loved having Max and the Sproule family living next door when I was growing up.

My sisters and I loved the Sproule days each and every year !! It was a day we all looked forward to. Luckily all Nan's boys were in Sydney so all the families turned up to be totally spoilt by Max and particularly Jan, who put on more food than was needed. The footy in the backyard with the cousins was a highlight for me - the combination of big Dunc, determined Andy, Matt & Martin and the elusive Craig always made the day a lot of fun (I think I still have some mental scars where it seemed that they all ganged up on me)... and if it wasn't footy, it was a game of tennis, cricket or just lounging around the huge backyard, maybe with the hose, water pistols etc Sharon, Kathy & Jo loved checking out the animals that seemed to change from year to year ... guinea pigs, rabbits, plus of course playing with the girl cousins I miss those days, I miss Nan ... and would like to thank Max and his family for all the great memories that my sisters and I have shared with everyone from Max's backyard. The last time my wife Jenny and I had some quality time with Max was at lunch at the Maroubra Seals Club (some 8 years ago) and he talked proudly of his kids. Wishing all continued good health ... with Love Steve Sproule

Max loved to drive. He would jump at any opportunity to drive a friend or family member somewhere or pick them up. So to be driven in the car by someone else was quite a novelty for him. As the Alzheimers progressed and his driving was restricted more and more Andy and I would drive him places. He would always comment on how wonderful it was to be able to relax and look out the window and enjoy the scenery. However, he couldn't resist offering driving advice or directions (he had an incredible sense of direction and knew Sydney's streets like the back of his hand). He was a generous driver and an appreciative passenger.
