I saw Marcel Marceau in New Zealand in the 1980s. My mother had just died. I was 15. I was in boarding school and felt I could not cry out loud in the dormitories. I saw Mr. Marceau's shows and he made me laugh and cry and I felt all the range of deepest feelings. I threw him a rose at the end of the show, and saw him exit the theatre with it after the show in the quiet Auckland night. I then went on to have a career as a dancer. I used my body to express deep and raw feeling. Thank you Maestro. You are in my heart forever
I love these famous quotes from the man who never spoke: Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us without words? I have designed my style pantomimes as white ink drawings on black backgrounds, so that man's destiny appears as a thread lost in an endless labyrinth. I have tried to shed some gleams of light on the shadow of man startled by his anguish. In silence and movement you can show the reflection of people. Music and silence combine strongly because music is done with silence, and silence is full of music. Music conveys moods and images. Even in opera, where plots deal with the structure of destiny, it's music, not words, that provides power. To communicate through silence is a link between the thoughts of man. What sculptors do is represent the essence of gesture. What is important in mime is attitude. And my favorite: It's good to shut up sometimes. Marcel Marceau

As a woman of many words, I can certainly appreciate a man of few. Marceau has always amazed me with his ability to communicate emotion in silence and gestures. In a time when we are constantly bombarded with noise and gawdy advertising, it is easy to pay tribute to a man whose subtle charm brought so much joy to so many.
I had the unique pleasure of seeing Marcel perform in person several years ago. He was able to hold the attention of the audience as a solo performer, a difficult thing to do. His performance was nothing less than brilliant. I came away with a profound respect and admiration for this talented artist. Je n'oublierai jamais!
