Er zijn nog leuke herinneringen aan oom Karst, hij kwam wel bij ons logeren in Arnhem. Dat was heel gezellig. Hij was erg aardig en zag er altijd goed uit. Lekker bruin door zijn verblijf in het buitenland. Mijn moeder sprak altijd vriendelijk over hem.

Karst was my uncle. My fathers name was Klaas Van Veen and he was Karsts older brother. I have no memory of him, our immediate family emigrated to Canada in 1954 and to the United States in 1957. My older brother, George, married an Australian girl and moved to Melbourne in the late 60's. He passed away 13 years ago, and his family now lives in Brisbane. My wife Jan and I are currently making plans on traveling to see them in January. My condolences to Elizabeth, family and friends. I am sadded that our family never had the opportunity to meet Karst. It's too bad, I have been to Oz twice already and it would have been great to have made a connection with him. We always understood that he did not want to have a relationship with his extended family, I don't know why. I will always wonder what he was like. Rest in peace Kaarst. Karst was the brother of my late grandmother, Roelie van Veen, who passed away in 2003. In my youth, I always saw pictures of Karst when visiting my grandmother, and was of course intrigued by the fact that he lived so far away. Now an expat myself, I had the chance to travel down-under in 2004 for my work. I visited Sydney for 2 days, before flying on to Auckland, Fiji and the Solomon Islands. Before leaving, I gave Karst a call, explaining who I was and asking whether we could meet, and to my delight this was possible. After a long and tiring flight from Europe, I left my luggage at the hotel and took a taxi straight away to where Karst and Elizabeth lived. I was hospitably welcomed and we had a nice evening together. They invited me to go to Manly beach the next day, taking the ferry. It was a wonderful morning and we had a nice fish 'n chips at the beach. Taking the ferry back, I went straigth to the airport for my next flight. Although the stay in Sydney was short, I am very happy to have had the opportunity to still meet Karst and Elizabeth, which left me with the memory of warm and friendly people. May he rest in peace.
