I met John in 1968, via a common friend, and the first thing that impressed me was his ability to sink a beer at Bob Hawke speed and have another while he waited for you to catch up. That was to be the first of many things which impressed me about John, I list but a few: - his caring for others - his devotion to his wife - his love for computing - his capacity for deep and lateral thought - his enjoyment of arguing - his penchant for large packets of jelly beans - his ability to go without sleep - the enormous amounts of sugar he had in hot drinks - his scary driving and perhaps most of all, his loyalty as a friend. He will be missed.
