Val, Bradley, Nicole, Jade, Melissa and Ashe I speak for all the members of Awabakals otherwise known as a great group of friends who enjoyed each others company, lots of fun and lots of everything else! The origin of the name Awabakals, was aptly provided by Dexter, following one of our mystery weekends away in the Hunter region where as part of one excursion we were introduced into some of the secret sights and meeting places of the Awabakal aborigine tribe. The Awabakals were a tribe who apparently enjoyed a good time

FAREWELL TO DEXTER PORTER. Farewell to Dexter Porter For he's joining God's choir too. And now he's shaking hands with Bud & Dave And saying Hi" from me and you. I bet he's talking about sport or Rugby Or about our group down here. While he orders holy tee shirts To compliment the Angels gear. Already booked them for a concert I bet hew's done it all online. So holy choir next week Will be singing on cloud nine. Dexter's keen enthusiasm Could be clearly seen by all, For he really liked to sing And always seemed to have a ball. His work and time in Rugby Union Was rewarded without failure, When they presented him some years ago With the Order of Australia. So Dexter see what you can do To save a place for us, So oneday when we get there We can join God's choir with no fuss. Dexter's singing now with Bud & Dave And all those other men, For his name's now on the holy roll Signed Dexter Porter O.A.M."

Hello, I used to live at Thirroul, now at Bermagui but currently in the USA. I knew Dexter when I used to present a programme on 2VOX/FM called Mainly Bing". I was just looking for a death notice of someone who passed away on Sunday and saw this notice. I, too, enjoyed my rugby and we spoke about this. I played for St. George in the 60's. I am very shoched and sorry to hear of Dexter's passing. My belated sympathy to the whole family. Ron Field"

We arrived at Gooyong St in 1976, having just migrated from a country once called Rhodesia. Dex, Val, Brad and Mel were among the first to welcome us; Gerry, Heather, Darren, Jenny and Gavin. The early days of a valued friendship. It was not long before we became part of Dex's rugby scene. We had a memorable trip to Lightning Ridge, calling in at Mudgee for refreshments. One day Dex was helping us recycle some timber which he had procured for us when we experienced a solar eclipse. Downing tools I said to Dex: Now this is a good omen. It's time you opened an office". Dex said that he knew just the place in Dapto. A good choice. Dex was a great "meeter and greeter". He was always willing to share his experiences and he seemed to be a friend to everyone. Above all Dex was honest, a reflection of his upbringing and family values. Dex was a colourful wordsmith. He had a lovely turn of phrase always demonstrated in his Christmas newsletters, which we so looked forward to receiving. We will cherish our memories of you Dex, and thank you for embracing us into your family. You were a great Mate, and a true friend of our family."

A MESSAGE FROM DEXTER

Val and Elizabeth were both transferred to Camden Primary School in September 1962 and instantly became good friends . Ron and Elizabeth were soon introduced to Dexter and it was obvious from the start that Val and Dex were meant for each other . We attended their wedding in Scone in April 1965 with our own 18mth old daughter and met their very friendly families. Our friendship has spanned 44 years with our visits to Gooyong Street , Val and Dexter's to Camden and Ron's 60th and then to the Gold Coast after we had moved up there. The computer age meant that Emails were constantly sent back and forth to keep in touch. The Christmas Newsletter will be greatly missed. We waited eagerly for it each year to catch up on all the family news. Dex was a wonderful writer. To the family we send our love and thoughts. We will cherish the memories of a good friend.

Dearest Val, My memories of Dexter are wonderful. I will never forget South Africa and the time we all had there. I laugh every time I think about the injections at the airport. Sorry I wasn't there to see him this year. Look out for the giraffes Dex. I miss you. Love Marie
