created memory in Angie Zapata
Although I never met Angie, she has touched my life. My first girlfriend was transgender so I was no stranger to the hate and discrimination. In 2009, a friend told me Angie’s story and encouraged me to attend that year's TDOR as a way of becoming more involved with our community. I was literally stunned by some of the stories told by the other participants. I was given a rose with Angie’s name on it to hold during the ceremony and later placed it on a board set up in the front of the church as we each went up to light a candle. Angie will always be a part of me. My love goes out to Angie and her family. I wish I could have been there for her.
