My first memory of Oscar was listening to my father's JATP LP with Oscar Peterson playing; it was amazing because this man played with such speed and yet so melodically perfect and ever since then, I have been Oscar hooked. As a pianist myself and a jazz drummer Oscar was one of my jazz inspirations along with the great Art Tatum. We shall never hear his like again as he was a true Jazz Giant. RIP Oscar

I first heard Oscar Peterson live in 1976 when he was awarded an honourary degree at Queen's University in Kingston. After the doctorate was conferred, Oscar chose to play instead of standing at the podium and speaking in response. Both of my parents also knew Oscar in Montreal during and after his high school days and heard him play many times at local venues. He has and will continue to be a wonderful musical influence on three generations of my family.

Probably the greatest interpreter of a tune ever ; when I first heard him , the great love he had for the piano really touched me . It took me months to work out some of his chord shapes and runs , he was a genius with a talent matched by his humility and kindness . A sad loss to jazz and music in general , hopefully he is now making great music in heaven . Nick Y oung

I never forget the moment I borrowed the record We Get Requests from the library. Since then his music accompanies me wherever I go. Recently I bought all the latest transcriptions and it is unbelievable exiting to watch one of my favourite numbers come alive on the piano. I will never be able to play them properly but it gives me lot of joy trying to play his beautiful accords time and time again.Oscar thanks for all the joy your music has brought in my live. I will never stop listening to your music.

Nothing more will be so as it was. Oscar Peterson is dead. A giant of the jazz keyboard and the unequalled master of lyric jazz moods, who in my childhood introduced me to the jazz at all, is dead. His unforgettable records will be always reissued and they will be still enjoing a great audiance of jazzfans worldwide. Thank you Oscar for the life inspiration you gave to me. Good bye and requiescat in pace.

Remembering London House Chicago.---The piano is silent .The genius is gone. But what a "jam" there is in heaven with Oscar, Ray, Barney and all the cats! Since 1950 we've seen OP every time and place we could, , but the best was with Ray and Ed Thigpen in Chicago. Being a pianist, Oscar was my idol. We got to visit with him on many occasions in clubs,Oscar graciously accepted an Honorary Board membership in the Naples ,FL Jazz Society at its inception, when asked by me , the PR directer. Joyfully, Oscar will continue to play on my piano, via a Pianodisc recording. Keep on swingin',Dear Oscar!

I've been meaning to meet you in person one day but ... I guess I can't do that now. It is a sad day but I'll remember you always in my music career... Thanks Oscar for your grand influence on me. You showed me what a human can do when he is focussed. Joseph http://jazzpianists.blogspot.com/ http://jazzpianoonline.blogspot.com/

As a very young person I used to work at Coulson's Service Station in Mimico where Mr. Peterson used to reside. I had the honour of meeting him, he used to bring his cars in for servicing. He was not quite as famous then however that changed. There are few words to describe a person of his stature, Honourable, Personable and Loving. The most famous Jazz Pianist in the World. I am proud to have had that opportunity to meet such a person. May I pass on my Condolences to his family and friends.

I've been a long time fan of Oscar Peterson's music and my wife and I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him in Toronto in November 2005. Always a class act, he put his hand on my wife and said "bless you" and he shook my hand. We will never forget that moment or the genius of his music.

My fondest memories were of Oscar 30 years ago when he introduced me to JAZZ as I watched him as a 15 year old at the Ontario Place revolving stage. I went out and bought " Satch and Josh" and a Jazz music book and found it to be beyond my abilities so I became a Rock Star (almost) instead. I will personlly miss Mr.Peterson..A Canadian treasure and Canadian Icon.

I started listening to the Big O when I was just 14 years old. Living in NYC I used to calm myself to sweet sounds of his playing. Many of my peers didn't get me back then. So all I'd do is invite them to my brothers collection and put on the Oscar Peterson Trio, and that solved all issues. There was a certain type of majestic and regal sound to everything he ever did. The world will miss this giant at large, and I will forever be in his debt for turning me onto Jazz, Americas forgotten sound

My sympathy to the children of Oscar Peterson that lived on Chrysler Cres. in Scarborough, Ontario back in the late 50's early 60's. Particularly Norman, whose company I enjoyed more than 45 years ago. We lived around the corner from one another, just a couple of kids, maybe 7 years old, living in a predominantly white neighbourhood. I don't know why but I do think of Norman often.....I remember we thought we were pretty cool standing on his veranda pretending we were smoking cigarettes, but using pencils instead. Maybe a silly memory, but nonetheless a fond one.

I first heard Oscars music in a history of jazz class in 1979. I bought a CD of songs he sings in Japan. He had a great voice. I always said he was my favorite. I will continue to shre his music with my friends. Tuning them on to one of the greatest. I don't have many regrets but I do regret not seeing him live. My foolish heart is one of my favorite songs.

My husband and I had the awesome opportunity to hear Mr. Peterson in NYC a few years after his stroke. He was right on his game. It was one of my most thrilling memories. Mr. Peterson is among the last the of jazz greats. He exuded dignity, courage, intelligence and kindness. God must be very happy with this child who was given a great talent and rose to the top of his art with his gift. We mourn his passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family.

I;m just a below average piano player. One night I went to see Oscar many years ago..At a piano bar in Century City. I sat as close as I could to him. I wanted to capture some of his tehnique. When he saw what I was doing he put in forth gear. I got up and left. He the greatest piano player that I ever had chance to see and hear.

I was fortunate to have grown up in a musical home where the greats like Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald were heard on a regular basis. I also had the priviledge of seeing Mr. Peterson perform live while in London, England in the late 60's. Thank you Mr. Peterson for the joy and love of music that you brought into my life and that of my children. You will be missed but never forgotten. Your legacy will live on in the young people that you have inspired to take up music. My sincere condolences to your family.

While in high school in the mid-sixties, I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Peterson. He was performing at Basin Street East, and the mother of my best friend made hotel arrangements in New York for many visiting jazz artists, and in return she received special treatment. During an intermission, I was introduced to Mr. Peterson. I immediately realized that he could have easily crushed my hand as we shook hands, but he was a gentle as a kitten and gave me a big, honest smile. I felt that I knew him, though this was the first - and last - time that I experienced a live performance by the master of the jazz keyboard. Mr. Peterson, you are missed, sir. Thank you for all your gifts to all you touched. God bless ...

I'll remember you as a Prince Hall Mason as I believe once a Mason always a Mason! You were the quintessential Jazz musician, my only regret is that though I have seen you perform live, more than a few times, I never got to sit down and talk to you! The world has lost one of its greatest assets!!! May you rest in peace!!!!!

I have listened to Oscar more than any other individual musician in my lifetime, at one time leaning over his shoulder to watch those amazing hands hovering and flying over the keyboard. For me, it all started when I watched the truly legendary Oscar-Ray-Herb trio with JATP in London. They were watertight together in a way I have never experienced since.- Geoff Smith, Woking, UK
