Norman or Mr Lee as we called him has been in our family for a very long time. He was there when my oldest brother married his daughter and he was there when my youngest brother married his other daughter. He was also there when we got married. It was a privelege to be around in these last few months as we both visited him daily in hospital helping and assisting him at mealtime as he has helped and assisted us in the past cooking us wonderful banquets. Just two things really come to mind - the day he said that you can live too long and then that he had lived too long. Also the story the nurses tell of his sense of humour, how they felt they were short and needed to wear their high heels because they were too short and how he looked down where his legs used to be and said to them ' You think you have something to worry about'. He will be missed by us all and we will always remember him.

Norman (who was my father-in-law) was a man who never asked for anything for himself and always thought of others. He was quiet and unimposing in character but, when he spoke, people always listened because whatever he had to say was always worth listening to. He was an extraordinary cook, although he never looked at recipes or cookbooks, and he had a way of always knowing what people liked or wanted. While he was a very quiet person, he was the sort of person who could provide company by just being in the same room, even though he didn't speak. He had a gentle heart but knew how to look into the hearts of others. He was old but, even with his very advanced years, seemed to have a wisdom that was beyond his years and a memory that spanned centuries. He didn't often tell stories but, when he did, there would be no raconteur who could grip an audience better than he could. Toward the end, he struggled and he was undoubtedly tired and ready to leave but, even though he has earned his rest, he is already missed and will reside in the hearts of those who knew him until they also go to their own future rest. I am privileged and blessed to have been brushed by his spirit.
