NIgel Watson was at Otgao Boys' High School in Dunedin, NZ from 1942 to 1946 and was Head Boy and Joint Dux in his final year at school before going on to university here in New Zealand, Cambridge in England and Princeton in the USA. A respected Old Boy of this School....
I especially remember Nigel (or "Mr Watson" as I have called him for longer) on holidays to Airey's Inlet that the Watson family showed boundless generosity having me along time and time again. He was a quiet calming presence with a ready smile and patience for teenage antics. When he did speak it was worth listening to, particularly from the pulpit! I know my wonderful friend Rachel loved him dearly and he will be sorely missed by her and his very special family.
We will pray with gratitude for Nigel and his family. We were speaking about him this afternoon in the Faculty room and he is remembered fondly, and with great respect. The 12th century theologian John of Salisbury is reputed to have said "We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours." May he rest in peace
