Gemma and Zoe will always treasure the time they shared with Grandpa, they especially enjoyed Grandpa’s sense of fun and his spontaneity as he regularly dropped in at home armed with cakes and scones that he bought for them to take for school lunches. Both Zoe and Gemma had many interesting conversations with Grandpa especially about politics and religion. He was always keen to share ideas and they did not shy away from discussing anything with him. Gemma remembers ‘Grandpa the Traveller’ and last year when Gemma was learning to drive Grandpa and Grandma joined her on many road trips and holidays as Gemma tried to ‘clock up the kilometres’. Trips included stops at Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Molong and Forbes where Grandpa loved to catch up with Dawn and the family on their farms. Gemma also remembers ‘Grandpa the Motor Mechanic’ who insisted that Gemma learn basic car maintenance and they spent one Sunday afternoon together where Grandpa taught her how to check the water and oil in the car and what to do if the car had a flat battery. In particular Gemma likes to recall how she thought her Grandpa was really “hip” as unlike most men, he liked to shop every Thursday night, in fact he liked to shop as much as possible as often as possible. Zoe looked forward to Grandpa coming over for lunch each Sunday after Church and remembers him as a great ‘conversationalist.’ After each visit Zoe liked to walk Grandpa to his car and yell out ’love you’ as he backed out of the driveway. Grandpa had a great sense of direction and Zoe remembers the many times that Grandpa happily collected her from school including the time he took her to a music exam when, unusually, he got lost, yet still managed to arrive early. He was quite hungry after this little ordeal and helped himself to the Clubs buffet before realising it was for a private function. Zoe remembers fondly how Grandpa enjoyed his food and always liked to know where his next meal was coming from and when dinner would be ready. She remembers sharing many good stories with him over a meal; her favourite being the one he told about the watermelon in the pram being was mistaken for a baby. Zoe also remembers ‘Grandpa the Tradesman’ who could fix anything that was broken covering all the trades from motor mechanics, electrical and plumbing as well as fixing clocks. He enjoyed the challenge and took great delight in helping others. Both Gemma & Zoe learnt so much from their wonderful Grandpa, he taught them compassion and they loved being in his company. They will treasure so many memories of him and will miss him for the rest of their lives.
