I attended one of Matcham's sculpture classes sponsored by the CAE in the mid-80's and later continued attending classes at his studio for about 3 years. I got to know Matcham well over that period and enjoyed hearing his stories of early life at Montsalvat and his part in it. Also his work during WW2 as a conscientious objector and his travels overseas and within Australia. He was a living history of the artistic movements in Victoria from the 1930's. I especially remember getting him to take me on a tour of the NGV one day. There was a story and mini lecture associated with many of the sculptures and paintings - a feast of information. I attended his 80th birthday celebrations, maintained regular contact and got to know his sons Marcus & Adam also, until I left Melbourne in 2003. I remember him as an fine sculptor, a source of information on art, a great humorous raconteur and intellectually eternally young. RIP Matcham Frank Pederick
