Jack and I worked at Minter Simpson, a legal firm in Sydney, nearly 30 years ago. He was the accountant and I was the accounts clerk. This was in the days when accounting records where still kept in big hardcover journals and figures where added up with calculators, not computers. While Jack and Beth where on holidays one time, I decided I should help Jack with a bit of the accounting work so he wouldn't have so much to do when he returned. At that point in time, I had no formal bookkeeping or accounting qualifications. Poor Jack! On his return he found all these little pen markings all over his beautiful journal books. I was so proud of the work I'd done for him and was sure he would be most impressed! Well, after the look of horror eased from his face, he ever so gently explained to me what his pen markings in his books had really meant and the importance of them. Essentially I had created a heap of extra work for him, which was going to take him hours to unravel and fix! However, he never yelled at me! He just gave me a smile and had a little laugh and went back to his office to start fixing up my mess. I was devastated at what I'd done and felt so embarrassed and upset. After that I decided I needed learn what this accounting was all about! I enrolled in a Commerce Certificate course with accounting as the main subject. I thrived in the course and achieved great marks, much to my surprise! After that I went on to complete an Advanced Diploma in Business Management and a Diploma in Accounting. I then qualified as an MYOB Certified Consultant and for the last 15 years have been running my own consulting and training business where I assist clients to setup their computerised accounting software and train them in how to use the system. My business has flourished over the years and it is Jack I have to thank for being the person who instigated and helped me achieve my business success. Without Jack's little smile and laugh on that fateful day, I have no idea what I would be doing today. Jack, I will remember you always and every time I explain a debit and credit to a client, I will sit for a moment as I smile and think of you. Thank you Jack.
