I first met Len and Norma Hinde in London when I was 17 and stayed with them for a week while my parents, Bob and Verna Johnston, were attending to Reserve Bank duties. I, too, came under Len and Norma's magical spell - Norma with her passion for pottery and mid-day movies, especially anything starring Shirley Temple that we could sing along with [it was winter and pretty bleak outside], and Len with his magical sense of humour and his love of Elgar and mathematical enigmas. Back in Australia, Len and Norma rescued me from college at Sydney Uni from time to time, taking me to lunch at the yacht squadron and showering me with some much kindness I will never forget. Len and I shared the same birthday [almost] so he was never far from my thoughts come April each year. My sincerest condolences to his family and to his many other friends like me who were shown a warmth and kindness from a truly wonderful man. Margaret Callan (nee Johnston)
Len and Norma Hinde were particularly dear friends of our parents, Jock and Willmott Phillips, and charmed us, the next generation, too. The two couples happily shared exotic holidays and other life experiences - such as Norma’s wisdom on pottery. Len, together with Malcolm Hill, were very supportive of us at the time of our parents’ death. As we know how Len could warm hearts with his gentle humour, we are sure he was much loved by many. We send warmest condolences to his family and friends for the loss of such a delightful spirit. Alison Robinson (nee Phillips) Joan Domicelj (nee Phillips) Peter Phillips James Phillips
