Kate was my aunt and my Dad's elder sister. She was a beautiful lady in all ways - elegant, hospitible and warm. She was the one who tried to keep all the cousins together as we aged and went our separate ways, by holding family "do's" or bunfights as she and my Dad Jack would have called them. I vividly recall a weekend I spent with Kate and George when I was around 12 yrs old. They spoilt me rotten, went to Manly, listened to records - great fun and very afirming at that age, for me. Also remember her looking so elegant (and totally out of place) riding in my old truck at Penrose as we bounced along a fire trail in the bush on yet another firewood collecting mission. She truly was a "good sport". Kate was the first person (apart from my mum and dad) to hold Nellie's and my first baby, James, when she came over to our place in Willoughby in 1991. She was always interested to hear my news from Singapore. I last spoke to her in 2006 when mum died and I sent her a card for her 95th. Somehow, once she passed 90 I thought she would just keep sailing on and make it to 100. I feel a sense of loss that I did not get to see her again. She also holds a place in Nellie's heart as she showed her great kindness when Nellie was new in Australia and didn't know many people. Hope this is not too long - my way of making up for not being able to be there for the family farewell this Friday. So many more memories of my dear Aunt Kate - typing this in the office I share with other lecturers - trying to hide the tears! Deepest sympathies to John, Tony, Mardi and Kate's brother Don. Hope to see you guys one of these days - maybe Tony soon as James is at Uni Melbourne. Love, Andrew
