I worked for John Smith in Bank of New South Wales Nominees, of which he was Canberra Manager, in about 1969, or earlier. Recently I received the Retired Officer's newsletter in which John's passing was noted, and was saddened. Although I must say he obviously had a good "innings". For me to remember him all these years he obviously made a big impression, as he did with everyone he met. I remember he was extremely proud of the Sherbrooke which set him apart from the other John Smiths. He was a kind but stern master who was extremely fair in his dealings with the small staff, always willing to lead us through the learning process. My biggest memory of him was his habit of letting his"ïn tray" build up to a massive height before he would attack it over a weekend. We would come in on the Monday morning to find we could actually see him behind the desk. It would be lovely to see other friend's and family tributes from those who knew him in more recent times.
