Joan played an important part in my life from the time I became politically aware, right through many campaigns over the years but in particular, our endeavour to make Australia more democratic. We did this by promoting an Australian Bill of Rights and an Australia Republic within a new and democratic Constitution. Another priority for Joan was working towards Education for Active Citizenship in an effort to empower people to play their part in society. All of us in the movement could always rely on Joan for her commitment and contribution and I remember many a time coming together at meetings both in small offices or at her home, working on newsletters and startegies for campaigns for many long hours. The thing I most remember about Joan is her untiring energy to work for the things in which she believed - politically, socially and personally. In spite of all these activities, she always put her family first, something for which I held her in high respect. She managed to somehow juggle all these things in her life and never made me feel that she had no time for me. She and her partner in life, Bill, will always be part of my life and Joan will be embedded in my memory for as long as I live. Goodbye my friend. Love Nizza
