First as a young army sergeant on leave, proud and confident in her military uniform. Then as a brave and fearless young woman leaving London to tackle a major sea crossing to the other side of the world. Next as a voice, strangely changed in accent, across the water. Then transformed into the matriarch of of a large and charming family welcoming to her overseas visitors. Finally, stoic in adversity, always ready with comforting words to others in their time of need. She once confided in my sister "He calls me his favourite aunt, but am I his only aunt ?" All who new her on this side of the world loved her and will miss her so much. Anthony Headland. London,England

Grandma's middle name is Rhoda, Welsh for 'rose' and so I thought this neat little phrase was particularly poignant, as she fed our hearts. “Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread but give us roses” -James Oppenheim, “Bread & Roses”

Grandma loved her blue cheese, the mouldier and the stronger the smell, the better. Once Ben and I cooked her a meal of fish, followed by a plate of cheese and strawberries. She politely nibbled at the rubbery fish, but when the blue cheese came out she lunged forward and took an enormous scoop of it and with a lick of her lips she'd devoured the whole lot! We love you and miss you Gram and hope your heaven has all the stinky blue cheese you could ever want. love Pip & Ben xxx

A woman and mother with unmeasurable courage and optimisim who had a massive stroke 21 years ago but survived until two days ago.Left with the use of one hand and mostly wheelchair bound, she considered two hands 'a luxury'. She raised we three children after our father dropped dead of a sudden heart attack aged 39. With strength she continued his fashion business the day after his death and gave us security and strength. An avid reader who commenced reading adult books aged 3, before she could sign her name, she continued this habit up to three weeks before her death and for many years was reading a book a day. She spoke French as a child living with her parents in France for six months, acting as their interpreter and also spoke German. Aged 18 she was a sergeant in the British army, commanding at least 40 men. She was in the first group of Army Allies to enter Germany at the end of WW!!. She received a special commendation for her work in despatches during the war. She studied 18 subjects at a London Polytechnic and was immensely clever, modest, refusing to accept pity even the day before her death - still saying there were others worse off. She said she came to Australia from England in 1951 on a working holiday. She said she'd found the work and was still looking for a holiday. An elegant woman with large and at times burning sky blue eyes, she was also a fabulous cook. She didn't use a recipe book, saying that she cooked "by Guess and by God." She was a woman who allowed her children the freedom to be children and enjoy many creative and messy activities, but she was a stickler for courtesy and good manners. No one can embrace all her qualities but positivity and courage stand out as headline banners for our mum IVY. She looked wonderful in blue, her favourite colour and loved the sea She is irreplaceable and will be sadly missed. Sally Cook
