Herb and I gaduated together from Mills High School in 1966. We went on to become roommates at San Jose State College. We loved camping, hunting and especially flying. We both majored in aeronautics and wanted to become airline pilots. We both got our pilot's license, and we flew as much as our money would allow. Herb and I put a large aeronautical map up on our wall and put push pins to identify all the airports that we had flown to. White ones were his, red ones were mine and both of us were silver. It was a real race to see who would have the most. I don't remember who won, but we must have had over fifty of them when we moved on. Herb got married, had a couple of fine boys, Adam and Brian (Baby A an baby B, as he liked to say), and we eventually lost touch. Herb was truly the finest friend I've ever had. He was fun, loyal and engaging. We were brothers. I was looking for him on "My Space" when I learned of his passing. It saddens me so much that I never saw him again. My sincerest condolences to his family. Allen Barseth

I did not know Herb well at all, but I do know Dian from working with her at Northstar and we have become very good friends. I do have a very vivid memory of Herb coming to the ticket counter and always waving and saying good morning with such a friendly smile on his face. I do know that Dian loved him dearly and always looked forward to Herb coming down from Washington for his visits. Dian was so excited about Herb retiring and both of them traveling. This meant a lot to her. Unfortunately, God took Herb away sooner than we all expected, and he is a great loss to Dian and his family and many friends. From the bottom of my heart, Dian, I am truly sorry for your loss and my heart breaks for your loss. I would do anything to take away the pain and sadness you have in your heart and life. I hope God gives you comfort, peace and love during these very trying times. Your Friend Always, Ellen

While working in Reno with Western Airlines, there were these guys from San Francisco with much higher senority who transferred in! Herb was one of these guys. We became friends immediately. Herb was so easy to talk to and helped me with my new job. Later when Herb and my now husband Rolf, learned they had both come over from Germany on the same ship, they immediately bonded. Later, we found ourselves working with Herb again in Portland. It was so nice to see that friendly smile again welcoming us and ready to show us around. Diann, Adam & Brian, we will always keep these fond memories and the fun times we had together! We love you all.

I have always had the best of loving thoughts for Herb. He was a man who could change the course of a bad day and a few short words. Mostly the happy good mornings and the efforts to make your day a little better even if his was ending and he was headed home. More than once he went out of his way as a firend and professional to show that he cared I will miss him from the bottom of my heart and will always feel a lose because he was so rare in the hectic world we all live in. The best to yor family and I thank you for the memories! Randy

I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to work with Herb for several years with Delta in PDX.. He truly was a professional in his work - always striving to perform his duties to the highest level - above and beyond. That is also how he treated our customers - with a class of service that was distinctive 'Herb" style customer service. I will miss our many conversations that covered the whole gamut - from Delta, world events and the best topic "golf"!!! What a guy!!! We'll miss you Herb - so very much. Joe

Herb was such a gentleman to his customers and to his friends. He had the best smirky smile when he was up to something, playing a joke, or telling a story. When I moved to PDX and started working with Herb, he was a bit skeptical, but in time we had a great respect for each other and a good friendship. I was so impressed with the number of passengers that would only want Herb to help them! He was the true essence of passion for his customers and wanting to always take care of them. Having spent many years with his true love Dian fulfilled Herb in ways he would not easily share. But he always had a smile on his face when he talked about Dian. Herb will really be missed by so many that loved him. But he will always be remembered! Cheers to you my friend.

for all of the passion and dedication shown each and everyday towards the customers you served and your friends at Delta Air Lines. The first time I met Herb he mistook me as a new Flight Attendant (I was actually flattered). He was horrified when he found out that I was indeed his new boss. He must have appologized a million times. I will miss our sessions of agreeing to disagree. I always knew I had to keep myself sharp and in the know because he would not hesitate to challenge me on just about any subject. I could always count on him to be honest and direct - but in the end he always had the best intentions and was always working towards the good of the customer and to improve the work environment. From the bottom of my heart I can say it will never be the same here without him! Good-bye Dear Herb - Dawn
