I was never lucky enough to have met him, but he was my life-long hero. It was by sheer chance I heard an album of Neapolitan songs over 30...actually, getting close to 35 years ago, and wa completely bowled over by the power, the beauty and warmth of his voice and singing. My parents were fans of Caruso and Gigli, but Pippo had something that I felt the others lacked; personality in the voice; he treated the Neapolitan songs with as much love and care as he did with the operas. The news wasn't unexpected, given the horrible events in his holiday home, but it was still sad. I have been listening to most of his songs and arias on YOUTUBE for most of the week. It was Pippo who first got me into opera in the first place. For that, I shall always be greatful. He lived a great life, and now he is at rest. God bless you, Maestro.
THE GREATEST TENOR OF OUR TIME
It was an enormous pleasure to hear Pippo sing live - for me in both London and Stamford, CT. I met him a few times. He was as wonderful personally as he was brilliantly gifted in his singing. Truly beautiful and so masculine at the same time. I have never found a comparable singer in the past 40+ years since I heard my first 45 rpm record of Pippo singing - Puccini arias in that case. RIP.
The very first opera aria I ever heard Pippo sing was "Addio Mignon" (in Italian) from 1947 with the LSO - the first two words "Addio Mignon' and I was hooked - I have never before or since heard such beauty and passion, it was like his whole body was music and song, there will never be another. God now has a new lead tenor for his heavenly choir. Thank you, Pippo I am a better person for knowing you.
From the time that I first heard the LP's of Pippo's Tosca with Maria Callas, I knew that I had found "my tenor." Fortunate to be studying at The University of Chicago during the great days of the Chicago Lyric, I saw and heard every Di Stefano performance between 1955 and 1958 and often flew in for the others. He was incomparable and is irreplaceable, his noble voice being matched by the generosity of his character
I am a professional soprano myself and growing up listened to Distefano as a child. I loved his voice and will always listen to great recordings of a truly gifted man. Now you will sing with the angels in heaven, and they as all of us will be graced with your beautiful voice. Rest in Peace! fondly, Alice J Kovach-Suehn
Heard years ago from a Scala patron; "when Pippo sang stars blinked in the theater" RIP Maestro
I am truly sad to hear about this Great Tenor's demise. May he rest in peace. His legacy will always remain with us- irresistible, irreplacable. Rest in Peace.
