Emil was such a great man. An uncompromising person of integrity. He was brilliant, and at the same time he had great compassion and was had his feet on the ground; he had a lovely easy nature and way of relating. Some may not know of his footy achievements: he played with Essendon Reserves Joy and Tim Linton

Although I only met Emil once, his assessment was precise and he gave me direction and a plan where others had failed. I am sure he will be sadly missed by the many lives he touched. My heart goes out to his family & friends, professional colleagues & patients.

To Dr Popovic's family: my heartfelt sympathy to you on the loss of a wonderful man who will be, in my mind, forever young. Emil was a young assistant surgeon (one of a magnificent team) who looked after my first husband, Bill Jessup, during and after surgery for glioma. Emil's cheery smile, genuine warmth and easy banter made such a difference to Bill during those awful days. Emil had an extraordinary capacity to connect with people. He even came to Bill's funeral, along with several others from St V's. I can't tell you how much that meant to me. Rosalind Allingham.
