Sir Edmund Hillary was one of the greatest humanitarians and explorers of all time. If every person reading this donated some money - could be $5 or $10 or more or less - to his charity The Himalayan Trust to help the people of Nepal - That would be the best legacy to keep that work going - and one Ed would so appreciate. He said in support of the trust "" To many Western eyes, the Everest region is a place of great beauty and high mountains to be conquered. For the Sherpas who live there however, life has few privileges. Medicine and Education are scarce, bridges and paths are often destroyed, and the forests upon which they depend are rapidly depleting. Despite these hardships, they are the most warm-hearted people I know. Any help you can provide will be so important and so gratefully received." I personally will miss you so much. You inspired myself and so many people more than you will ever know. If you are in New Zealand a donation can be made at any branch of the BNZ and in America through The American Himalayan Trust or Foundation - In the UK there is a branch as well and in Nepal. Thank you all.

Times at Snells Beach - my brother was friends with a nephew of Sir Ed's and I remember their bach being the last on the right as you walked down the hill to the beach. My children were fortunate to have attended Rangeview Intermediate when Sir Ed and Lady June visited to unveil a Anzac Memorial at the school in 2003. My husband being a member of the Board of Trustees was able to get Sir Ed's signature in a book '50 Famous New Zealanders'. It was a honour he said to be in the presence of such a man. Rest in Peace Sir Ed. You are gone but not forgotten.

When he reached the top of the world, he must have realized that he could not physically go higher. and maybe thats why he did all those good things for the nepali people, just so that he could surpass his own record. I will rememeber him more for what he did for nepal than for his conquest for everest

Sir Ed, you will be missed. I was with him in Antarctica last year on the 50th anniversary of his South Pole expedition. His eyes lit up as he regaled us with his stories late into the night; the night before he would sleep once again, for the last time, on the Ross Ice Shelf. You are my hero, a true gentleman, a true explorer, and the world was made better by your life. Thanks, Sir Ed, as you enter your next great journey. To us it seems like the long good night, but I know you are finding it the next great adventure.

Sir Edmund Hillary was a vivid part of my childhood. I remember with fondness the day he conquered Everest and the joy my mother felt. My sister was named after him Two years ago I was fortunate to visit New Zealand and passed through the town in which he was born. I was privileged to meet Sir Edmund in the local post office in Auckland. What a great and humble man.

Sir Edmund Hillary has always been a great inpiration to me and humankind. He has been a spiritual guide through many of my adventures in life. He will always remain in my soul. His humility and humanity exceeded the height of the mountains he climbed.

Edmund Hillary was called as "Undeclared ambassador for Nepal and Sherpa communityā€¯. He has built schools and hospitals, and trained health workers in the harsh, mountainous region of Nepal. A great loss for Nepal and Sherpa Community.

When Sir Edmund Hillary stood on top of the world he put New Zealand on the map. He personified heroic achievement: Courage balanced with compassion. He gave all New Zealanders something to aspire to. He showed us-and the world that it does not matter where you have come from, only where you are going.

He life and achievements are a great inspiration; we named our first daughter, "Hillary" after Sir Edmund. We told her that we believed she would have the spirit and determination to climb the mountains that would face her in her life. She has graduated from a Maritime Academy, and is joining he "Peace Corp". James A. Ruggles La Jolla, California

Several years ago at a George Lowe lecture, raising funds for The Himalayan Trust, my eyes were opened. I will never forget that inspiring evening, learning about Sir Edmund Hillary and of his fellow climbers and supporters life long efforts to help the people of Nepal. Not for him the world glamour and celebrity status of superstars. They merely come and go. Sir Edmund was a giant amongst men who loved humanity. An inspiration for us all. I feel saddened at his passing. I feel gladdened to have learnt of his strive for the lives of others. My thoughts go to his family.
