Joe Schildmeyer is a brother to Bruno. Bruno usually called every Sunday night to find out the latest news that was happening in Ossian, IA. When Bruno visited Iowa he liked to stay at Joe’s farm. This farm was located just two-miles northeast from the home place where Bruno grew up. He would sit for hours in a lawn chair placed in the yard and reminisce the years gone by. He would comment to how peaceful it was on cool summer nights. He loved to drive around Winneshiek county and look where he played at as boy. Remembering friends the he made and examining a life that seemed to move to quick. Then it was back to California, knowing he would back to examine it all again in two years. Bruno's last visit to the farm was in 2007 and he will be missed.

The railroad help Ossian grow from 1860 until this picture was taken in 1956. Passenger service was available then, which is now only used for cargo trains. The train station in this picture is long gone, but I bet you Bruno and Joe still remembered it. I can only imagine what Ossian and the main station in Calmar Ia. looked and sounded like after the soldiers came back from WWII. Bruno was a teenager then. Time changes and waits for no one. I’m 54-years old and have no recollection of this building. I was born in 1953.

Type your memory in this box and click Next I was privileged to have know Bruno through the United Singles for the last 3 years. I often shared a table with him and Helen. When he found out that we both spoke German, he tried and recollected much of our mother-tongue. Unfortunately, he spoke very low and partially because of his missing teeth and my old ears, it was hard to understand him. I often guessed at what language he was using and there was a lot of "ja, ja" on my part. One day, he looked at me and said: "You have no idea what I just said", and I replied "You are absolutely right". I appreciated his kind and gentle spirit, and his unwavering strength to make light of his suffering. I saw him in the hospital, where I volunteer, while he was going through Chemo, but he never once complained. It must be a German thing. My German mother called it "the inner corset". In any case, I felt privileged to have known him, and I am sure, he looked down on us all today and smiled.

God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come with me.” With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, and saw you fading away, Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, working hands were put to rest, God broke our heats to prove to us He only takes the best- Thanks Aggie

"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intellingent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have succeeded." - Copy to Clipboard -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

BRUNO ANTHONY SCHILDMEYER March 21, 2008 West Covina, California due to Lung Cancer Born February 23, 1926 in St. Lucas, Iowa to Henry Fredrick and Elizabeth Maria (Wulf) Schildmeyer, Bruno was raised and St. Francis De Sales in Ossian, IA. He was the eldest of 8 children. His graduation from Loras College in Dubuque, IA in 1949 with a B.S.. in History began his travels which led him to California and onto the South Pacific. There he worked on atomic defense projects for several years. A romance blossomed with his pen pal Judie Sakamoto of Maui, Hawaii. They married in Santa Monica in 1956 and remained so until Judie's death in 1996. They settled in West Covina and raised 4 wonderful (each in their own way) children. His career as a Small Business Owner working as an Independent Insurance Salesman and Financial Planner spanned more than 40 years. Recently his volunteer work with the elderly kept him busy as well as being a member of the K of C. Important elements of his life were his Catholic Faith, his relationship with his Companion Helen, smoking cigars, supporting charities, playing dominos with friends, and being an independent entrepreneurial thinker (translated: headstrong and stubborn). Bruno came to be known for his warm-hearted compassion, generosity in friendship, genuine concern for others and his devotion to his family. He is survived by: His siblings- Mary Apel, Lacrosse, WI, Joe Schildmeyer, Ossian, IA, Sister Elizabeth Ann, Michigan City, IN, Frances Topf, Orange, CA. His children- Henry and Suzanne Schildmeyer, Covina, CA, John and Mary Schildmeyer, Claremont, CA, Larry and Lynne Schildmeyer, Wailuku, Maui, HI, and Ann Schildmeyer, West Covina, CA. His grandchildren- Brian Schildmeyer, Stephanie Koch, Shane Schildmeyer, Makena Schildmeyer, Desi Prudhomme, Michael Esquibel, Melissa Esquibel, Blake Esquibel, and his great grandson Hunter Esquibel. His longtime companion - Helen Reese. He is predeceased by his parents Henry and Elizabeth Schildmeyer, wife Judie (Sakamoto) Schildmeyer, sister Ann Schildmeyer, brother Billy Schildmeyer, and sister Agnes Topf. Visitation Forrest Lawn Covina Hills, CA on March 27, 2008 Funeral Mass: Sacred Heart Church, Covina, CA on March 28, 2008
