In 1951 Brian and I first met when he, his father and I, together with Jim Burrows were all employed at the Department of Road Transport and Tramways, then in Phillip Street Sydney. My first memory of Brian was incredulity that anyone could so resemble his father, right down to headshape and rosy complexion. Brian inducted me into the intricacies of left and right bowers, and other arcana of his then favoured game of 500 that regularly marked each lunchtime. And then he and Jim went off to the first intake of National Service. Blow me down if we three didn't see each other next when we became members of the Duntroon Class of 52-55.
