Strange that only this week I found and posted photos of the Shepparton United Football Club's Demonette Cheer Squad on Facebook, only to just find out that Barry Connolly had just recently passed. Barry was resposible for bringing the original cheer squad together. We were all treated with great respect from fans and players alike, for such a young group of girls invloved with a regional football club. Thank-you Barry for all the great memories & for being a great mentor. My condolences to the Connolly family. Kind Regards Sharyn Worley Glennon.

The last time I saw Barry was several years ago at the MCG. The Dockers had just beaten North Melb on a goal at the siren by Des Headland. At Barry's invitation I had taken my young son and daughter down to the rooms where Barry was holding forth and as always organising the adoring multitide of supporters as they sought to touch their heroes. My young daughter could not see over the multitude so Barry brought her "into" the inner circle of people to get a close look at the players. He asked who she would like to speak to and she only had one choice Aaron Sandilands. Without hesitation Barry went and returned with the "giant of a man". Aaron spent several minutes of his time speaking to my children and made a lasting impact on both my son and daughter. From that day they both barracked for the Kangaroos, Aaron Sandilands and Barry Connolly. He was a "selfless" man who valued sport for the way to do things in the proper fashion. When I coached at Waaiia his name was revered for what he had meant to that clubs evolution. The Australian Dictionary (not Webster's) defines the word Stature as: height of a human body. 2. Degree of eminence, social standing. He certainly was short in the former but I am sure in the eyes of myself, my children, and those of all that were privileged to know him, he was a GIANT of the latter. To Monica and the children the thoughts of myself and my family go out to you on the loss of one of the true gentleman of sport and the world. I did not know of his passing until I heard it announced by Gary Lyon on the footy show. I was working in the rain all day on our property at Kinglake West. Now I know why. The sky was crying all day as you were laying him to rest. All our love. Dale Platek and family.

To Barry and his family condolances in these dificult times. Barry was a mentor and advisor in not only football but life. He put aside the intense "United" vs "Shepp rivalry to always offer his friendship and deep knowledge gleaned over a lifetime in the cut and thrust football world. Bulldog brothers from different eras I wiil always remember your valued advice. Rod Macpherson

So sad to hear of Barry's passing. Dad spoke of always as a trusted and respected friend. Our family connection and friendship goes back many years spread across great distances. Dad, now living in Townsville, was very shaken by the news and wishes with all his heart he could be present on Thursday! Our thoughts are with you all! Greg Connors - Darwin

As a small child, any visit to Shepparton was not complete without a visit to to Connolly household. While my father, Francis, and Barry would talk football, Monica would fill us with biscuts and Chris, Jenny, Shane & Jo would entertain us. A true family man at heart, Barry always delighted in scooping up any unsuspecting child and blowing big, long raspberries on our bare tummies. This is my fondest memory (of many) of him. I last saw him at my wedding in May of 2009, holding court and entertaining others with his vast humour and bottomless bag of stories. He made significant contributions to the football world, but more importantly, his influence on his and my family is a legacy that honours a wonderful man. RIP. - Neroli Schutt (nee Bourke)
