I knew Barbara very well during her time at David Jones, I worked for the company for 15 years and on a number of occasions would visit the DJs Archives at Silverwater. I had undertaken a personal research into the history of David Jones and in particular the Jones Family. Barbara was so kind in allowing me to view a lot of the David Jones Archives and was generous in copying many of the letters from David Jones from the 1830s when he was originally setting up the business. Barbara also had copied two wonderful photographs, one was from a portrait of David Jones, the other of David & Jane Jones and their 4 sons which she kindly gave to me. I also saw some of the magnificent display cases which once graced the ground floor of the Elizabeth Street store and were made by de Groot who cut the ribbon by default at the opening of the Harbour bridge. I remember 3 "events" which occurred at David Jones while Barbara was archivist: 1. When the new CEO Chris Tideman took over the reins of David Jones, he wanted the history of the company destroyed - and it is said that Mr Tideman went into the Boardroom and had all the framed history of the company removed and thrown into skip bins - Barbara said she had the unpleasant job or retrieving all she could from the skip bins before it went to the tip. 2. Having been with David Jones for 15 years, I had developed a great rapport with a number of regular long tern customers. They showed great interest in the history of the company, so with the help of Barbara we set up a number of Archival displays within the stores of the Archives which had long been in storage. 3. I was based in the Chatswood DJs store, I was Barbara's right hand man when it came to generous customers who would bring in items of historical merit to David Jones and would leave them with me, I would then telephone Barbara to let her know what had been brought in and she would then collect the items from me as she lived near the Chatswood store. I was greatly saddened to learn of Barbara's passing. I left David Jones in 1998 and lost touch with her. She was a generous and kind lady with a drive and determination to preserve the rich history of an amazing company - Bless you Barbara !
