Austin was the branch manager of NZI Auckland broker branch. He was the best manager that branch had had for a long time, and his replacement just doesn't compare. Austin made that branch a great place to work again, he supported his staff 100% - he was firm but fair and wasn't afraid to say no to the brokers his office dealt with. He lead the staff in a way that they weren't afraid to follow his direction and vision. Unfortunately his vision was short lived, cut short by his death

"Austin Hemmings", so much has been told about your legend and what you had done to save D**** N***. I found this memorial website for you through the NZ Herald website when I had been going through all the court hearings about your case. I just want to say this is not easy for me...people may read this blog and start wondering who am I to come and say these things online. However, it needs to be said, first off, I'm sorry it ended that way., I wish I could have done something to stop it from happening. I wish I knew how to read his mind before everything happend. I'm also sorry that I haven't been in touch with your family yet. It's been a year and almost 6 months since you've been gone but you are still missed dearly especially by your loved ones and your friends. But, I still want to say I am sorry and before the trial begins I will try and contact your family and speack with them. As im typing away tears roll down my cheeks coz I am lost of words to say...my heart does go out to you and your family, the position I am in is not an easy one...and I know it is not compared to the position your family is in. I know you were a Chsitian but I too come from a Christian family but my spiritual walk is weak and is slowly climbing again after what had happend. If my faith was stronger like my mother said... I would have been able to stop all this and nothing would have ever happend. Sorry can't bring you back, but I have been reliving the day you had left over and over again everyday coz of my guilt. I know you are in a better place than this cruel world we live in but peace be with you. From a person who is afraid to reveal herself.....

I did not know your father and happend to read a news article about what your dad did for that girl and her family and all I can say is your lucky to have a dad like that! I just want your family to know that there's a young man from America saying an extra prayr for your dad and your family! Hope I get to meet him up in the heavens someday!

I today am still so sad and so touched by this tragedy, but what moves me is because as terrible as it was, it showed that there still is humanity out there. My heart did on the day and still does go out to the Hemmings family, I am a mother of two and can see how loving and warm your family is, and our tight a family bond you all do share. I know words, flowers and cards will not bring Mr Hemmings back, but know that his actions have touched a lot of people in so many ways and have opened our eyes to what the world has become. He was and is still a very brave and selfless man, who I am sure if I had met him in person would have shone with the vibrance that I can see from his photo. Again I am so very sorry, my heart aches for a stranger I never met and a family I do not know personally, Myself and my family send you all their love in the world, you are indeed a credit and proof that strong family bonds and values do exist. With all my love Fiona Auckland

Today when I was lighting the fire I came across the article in the Christchurch Press of the death of of Austin Hemmings. I along with most other Kiwis had followed the events in the media at the time, but time passes and our lives move on. As I re read the article today I felt a real sadness and wanted to somehow encourage the members of Austin’s family. I am a father of 5 teenage children of similar age to Meghann, Jessica and Gareth. I don't really know what to say to you and can only imagine the pain you suffer. Be very proud of your Dad and talk about him often let his life, energy and values live on in you. Don't be scared of feeling angry at times but don’t allow bitterness to enter your heart as it becomes like a cancer to you soul. May god bless you and keep you. Paul Christchurch

jessica hemmings is one of my best friends. i was at school with her when she lived in hamilton. austin was a wonderful father, husband and man. i remember once we were all going to a ball and we got ready at jess`s house her dad was wonderful he was a 'acting' photogropher. he was so funny. he dropped us off you could tell he was so proud of his daughter. another time for jess`s birthday austin and jenny left us so we could have the house to ourselves. he was such a family man. his family was his life. he would bend over backwards for them. the morning of the after his death we all gathered in our school chapel and lit candels and pryed for austin and his family. he will never be forgotton. people do not die to be forgotton they die to be remembered for who they were.

I remember Austin well. His wife, Jenny, is my sister. It is true that he was good at his job...he could help people work together. It is true that he was a strong family man...his kids love him dearly. It is true that his wife was his best friend...they shared the best of friendships together. It is also true that he was willing to take a calculated risk, his job was risk assessment, in coming to the aid of a woman who needed help. And he would want me to say that NZ would be a better place if more of us were willing to take that risk, to help someone else in need. And not only this, if we were to pray as Austin did, for his family, his workmates, and the people of NZ, then maybe we too might be changed to be like this hero, my brother-in-law, who was willing to be the answer to his prayer. He gave his life so that another might live. May these words become true for Austin...that a grain of what has fallen in to the ground alone and died, yet it has born much fruit. John 12:24

Thank you Austion, what a great testimony you have just shared with the nation! As it is written in 1 John 5:10, " those who believe in the son of God have the testimony in their hearts". Your life is simply the best testimony for what Christ has done for every one of us, and your family has managed to share with all whom He loves.
