I studied under Professor Crown from 1992 -1994 - majoring in Jewish Civilisation. The world has lost a great man. He inspired me to higher learning, supported my studies in Israel and always had fun teasing his "young Catholic student". No-one who knew him could forget him.

I was one of his students who studied Samaritan Origins under the guidance of Professor Alan Crown at Sydney Uni from 1987-1990. I could not forget his kindness, passion, and depth on Samaritan Studies.

Dear Rev. Dr. Chang, I hope this reaches you, as I have wanted to contact you for many months. I thank you so much for your published works on the Samaritans. I also saw where you previously studied Crusades, as I also have done. I hope you are doing well. I would love to contact you further regarding our common work and ministry interests. I dare to hope you may also take an interest in my project for global revival of the Church and give some feedback in my work here at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, on the Samaritans and the parable of Luke 10. I am unable to find your book anywhere in the world and wonder if you know how I could please buy a copy? I thought you might like to know how hard it is for scholars to find your book. I'm sure several others would like access to this valuable work of yours. Agape, your brother in Christ, James Mace P.S.--Please reply with a message so we can establish email connection.

I will miss Alan, I have never met him personally, just through his work and emails. He was always so helpful and encouraged me in my studies on the Samaritans. I have just heard the news this day and I am sad. I am sorry to hear the news and feel sympathy to Mrs. Crown, her family, friends! Larry Rynearson Editor of the Samaritan Update I will really miss you Alan!

I have so many affectionate memories of Professor Crown: the sparring sessions (aka Hons tutorials - I was his only Samaritan Hebrew student that year) which ranged over a wide field of topics with some tangential connection to the text in front of us; his incredibly quick wit and irresistible sense of humour; his kind encouragement of me in the pursuit of my studies, supporting my applications for scholarships and using a research grant to employ me part time... if you were born after 1980 you won't believe this, but my job was to type up his Samaritan manuscripts, line by line, backwards (left to right, letter by letter) as we didn't have the software back in 1995 to support right-to-left text entry! I will always remember Professor Crown with great respect and affection. His vast, eclectic knowledge; his rare genius for synthesis which brought together seemingly random fragments of that knowledge to shed light on so many questions; his intellectual detachment and lifelong intellectual curiosity, were an inspiration. I offer my sincere sympathy to Mrs Crown and the family in their sorrow.
