Do you think it still exists? I remember being a teenager in the 80s and there was still a great deal of stigma involving the AIDS virus and HIV. People weren't really educated about how it was contracted and there was a great deal of bigotry.
My question is: Do you think that stigma still exists today?
That is a very good question Julie! i had to take some real honest time to reflect on this. I think the answer to that question really depends on where you live. Where I live (or at least me personally) I don't really see HIV and AIDS treated with the sort of stigma it got back in the 80s. I see more people speaking out openly about having it, or dealing with a family member who has it.
I believe that the real way to end stigma to AIDS or really anything is open candid discussion.
Where I live, AIDS is a big problem but the problem has decreased greatly. Once there was said to be almost 5.2 million to 5.7 million infected with HIV now the numbers are said to be between 2 million and 3 million infected.
HIV/AIDs is spread a great deal from sex workers here in India, but I think that HIV education is growing stronger!
