About
World's Tallest Woman
Sandy Allen, 53, recorded to be the world tallest woman of 2.31-metre, according to the Guinness Book of World Records died at a nursing home in Shelbyville, Indiana, US.
The real cause of her death is unknown but doctor reported that she has been suffering from blood infections, respiratory problems, diabetes and kidney failure.
“She accepted the title of ‘Tallest Woman’ with pride, and became an international figure, appearing as Angelina the Giantess in the Oscar-winning Fellini movie Casanova , and was the subject of countless TV documentaries,” said Guinness Book editor-in-chief Craig Glenday.
At birth baby Allen weighed 6.5lb and by the time she was 10, she had grown to over 6ft tall, and by the age of 16 she was 7ft 1in.
According to doctors, when Allen was small, she developed a tumor in her pituitary gland—a pea-sized structure at the base of the brain that secretes several hormones that are key to the body’s function, including human growth hormone. As a result of the tumor, she developed gigantism—her bones grew excessively, causing, among other things, her prodigious height.
