About

Australian Country Star

Australian country singer Reg Lindsay has died at the age of 79.

Born in Sydney in 1929, Lindsay was the first Australian to play at the Grand Ole Opry, paving the way for Australian country stars like Keith Urban to later take on the USA.

Lindsay`s biggest pop hit was 1970`s `Armstrong`, a number one on the Australian pop chart. The song was written by Kingston Trio member John Stewart and was about the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Stewart died in January this year.

Lindsay was a household name in Australia in the 50s, 60s and 70s with thanks to his television show The Reg Lindsay Country Hour and the more than 500 songs he recorded.

His other major hit was `July, You`re A Woman`.

Reg Lindsay was awarded for Order of Australia in 1989 Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music,

He died of pneumonia in Newcastle yesterday. It was also his birthday.

Reg Lindsay - An Influence that lives

Ron (Oct 06, 2008)

I was a city boy and only knew Reg Lindsay for his magical song Armstrong. It was just one song, but one that has always been with me. A few weeks after I heard of his death the memory of Armstrong motivated me to look Reg up on the internet. I had no idea he was so big in the bush, or that his material was still available. I bought a copy of No Dress Rehearsal and loved it. I was bit late coming Reg, but thanks for this magnificent introduction to Country Music.

To Reg... a true mate of Country Music

Colin James (Aug 15, 2008)

This is my belated tribute to a man who was a true legend of country music... and one I was always proud to call a mate.

It wasn't long after I met Reg that we bumped into each other at a shopping centre in Tamworth, where he asked me whether I had ever been invited to place my handprints in the Hands of Fame Park. I told him "no", adding that I didn't think I had done enough to earn that kind of honour. He disagreed and told me he would do something about it... and sure enough, one year later, I was tipped on my side (wheelchair and all) where I became the first to add my 'fistprint' (I couldn't flatten my hand) into the Hands of Fame, where it can still be seen to this day.

You were a man of your word, Reg... and there's not too many of us around!

I can also recall the evening when you and Ros shared a meal with my dear wife Diane (you called her "the cook") and I at our home in Geelong. Diane was most embarassed when, right in the middle of our dinner, our pet cat jumped up onto the table... but we all had a great laugh about it at the time.

Yes, there were many happy memories, Reg... and you were a part of them

My sincere condolences to you Ros (sorry I no longer have your current address, so couldn't send a card) and the rest of the family. You have lost a great man and I have lost a good - and true - mate of country music.
