About

Bits about Barry

Barry George Shepherd was born on 22nd May 1946. His parents were Edith and Stanley Shepherd and he had two older sisters; Joan and Florence. He grew up in Manchester and as a result was a BIG Manchester United fan! He moved over to Nelson in his teens and met the love of his life Ivy Tillotson at the age of 16. They married in 1966 and soon after had 2 children; Sharon and Ian. He was a loving and kind father who was loved dearly and respected by both of his children. The family was very close. He worked on the buses for a while, and then made a living as an Electro Plater. In 1985 his first Grandson John was born. Cheryl followed shortly after in 1987, and then Christopher in 1994. He was a doting Grandad and loved each of his grandchildren dearly. This love was reciprocated by his grandchildren, and each one looked up to him and adored him.

Barry had many friends and was well known by many in the area. He was a regular at the local pubs in Nelson, including the Bull and Lord Nelson. He was a keen snooker player and often played with his son Ian at the Carlton working mens club and the Fast and Slow.

Barry received news of his illness in 2006 and was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. After a course of radiotherapy and an operation to remove the tumor, the illness sadly could not be cured. Barry passed away on Thursday 24th May 2007 at around 6pm. His family was with him and he was peaceful.

He is missed every day by many people, especially his doting family. He made a mark in this life and will never be forgotten. His memory will live on and be cherished forever. Rest in Peace xxx

This isn't a memory of my grandad I'd just like to say that on 24th May it was a year ago since my Grandad died and the family all went out for a meal and a few drinks...It went really well and I enjoyed it...Im sure my grandad would have been happy! xxx

Lost his teeth

John Sunderland (May 12, 2008)

My memory of Barry was when we used to work together. We were doing a joinery course back in 1990. He went to the toilet and has he flushed the toilet he coughed and he lost his munches down the toilet. He had me lifting all the drains to see if we could find them... we never did... it was a laugh.....

ghist

ghost (May 12, 2008)

For the last time; he approached the table,
Studied the layout closely,
Looked across the green baize sea,

There was a hush in the crowd and they knew,
This would be Barry's Last game,
He took his position and steadied his cue,

And a break of amazement commenced,
Red, black, red, black,
The Balls were totally obedient,

Heading for a maximum now, the elusive 147,
Referee counting the break,
Barry could see and hear nothing but the table and balls,

He felt his mouth go dry and crossed back to his seat,
Taking a drink of ice cold bitter,
And a drag from his cigarette,

He returned to the table and continued his break,
He heard the ref call out, "One Hundred and Forty Seven."
Barry opened his eyes and smiled an enigmatic smile,

The morphine coursing through his body,
His wife by his side,
And a few moments later, My good friend, Barry, Died.

So I raise a glass in your Memory,
And this toast I make to you
"to the man who taught me how to live."

May you make many 147's on that great snooker table in the sky my friend.
